"Not Disassembly or Assembly but Entire Relocation" Daejeon City Completes Move of 'Cheoldo Bogup Warehouse'
The nationally registered cultural heritage site, the Railway Supply Warehouse, which was located at the East Plaza of Daejeon Station, has been relocated to Sinan 2 Station Park.
According to Daejeon City on the 26th, the Railway Supply Warehouse is a wooden structure measuring 41.8 meters in length, 9.5 meters in width, and 6.5 meters in height, originally built in 1956 at the East Plaza of Daejeon Station. In 2005, it was designated as a nationally registered cultural heritage site, recognizing its value.
However, due to the proximity of the Railway Supply Warehouse to the construction area for the East Plaza Road as part of the ‘Daejeon Station Area Redevelopment Promotion Project’ and the site for the construction of the Complex Transfer Center, Daejeon City recently decided to relocate the Railway Supply Warehouse to the nearby Sinan 2 Station Park.
Since the Railway Supply Warehouse is a building designated as a nationally registered cultural heritage site, there were concerns regarding the method of relocation.
For the same reason, Daejeon City, after long discussions with members of the Cultural Heritage Committee, decided to proceed with the relocation of the Railway Supply Warehouse using the ‘whole building movement method’ rather than the conventional dismantling and restoration method.
By utilizing a modular trailer to preserve the original form of the Railway Supply Warehouse, the city chose a construction method that moves the entire building. This method is significant as it is the first case of its kind in South Korea.
From the afternoon until midnight on the 25th, the city lifted the building and secured it onto the modular trailer. At 11:30 PM that day, the Railway Supply Warehouse departed from the East Plaza of Daejeon Station and completed its relocation to Sinan 2 Station Park by 2 AM on the 26th.
The relocated Railway Supply Warehouse will be developed and utilized as a complex cultural space for exhibitions, culture, and performances in the future.
In particular, the whole building movement method for cultural heritage buildings is evaluated as opening a new horizon in cultural heritage preservation, departing from the existing relocation methods.
Daejeon City emphasized that this will remain a model case that other institutions, struggling with cultural heritage preservation methods during various development projects, can adopt.
Park Pil-woo, Director of the Urban Housing Bureau of Daejeon City, said, “The Daejeon Station area preserves the history of Korea’s railways, including the railway staff village and the Railway Supply Warehouse. Daejeon City relocated the Railway Supply Warehouse using the whole building movement method, not dismantling and reassembling, to preserve its cultural heritage in its original form as much as possible.”
