Jeju Air Sees Increase in Passengers Purchasing Baggage in Advance
238,874 Cases Until August... 78% Increase Compared to 2019
The number of customers using Jeju Air's advance baggage purchase service is steadily increasing. The company explains that it is popular because it allows customers to save an average of 30% on baggage fees.
From January to August this year, the number of advance baggage purchase transactions for Jeju Air's domestic and international flights reached 238,874. This is a 77.8% increase compared to 134,378 transactions during the same period in 2019, when air travel demand was at its highest. Despite fewer flights compared to 2019, advance baggage purchases have actually increased.
By route, the Japan route accounted for the largest share with 85,162 transactions (35.7%). This was followed by domestic routes with 77,508 transactions (32.4%) and Southeast Asia routes with 63,369 transactions (26.5%).
It is notable that the number of transactions is evenly distributed monthly rather than concentrated in specific periods. The company analyzed that this increase is due to the rise of niche travelers who take trips on weekends. The weak yen phenomenon, which encourages tourists to travel to Japan for shopping, also contributed.
The company's advance baggage purchase service can be used through the Jeju Air website or mobile application (app) up to 24 hours before the flight departure. When purchased online in advance, customers can buy at a cheaper price compared to purchasing on-site at the airport. Including the free baggage allowance provided according to the airfare, customers can purchase up to 40 kg (up to 3 pieces for Oceania routes).
