Changnyeong-gun Hosts Technical Field Demonstration for Garlic Sowing Mechanization under Government Policy
Poor Garlic Sowing Mechanization Excellence Model Development Project
Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, announced that on the 13th, it held an on-site demonstration of mechanized garlic planting technology for about 100 garlic farmers at the Agricultural Machinery Education Center of the Dochon Branch of the Agricultural Machinery Rental Business Office.
The county is promoting full mechanization throughout the entire garlic cultivation process as part of a government policy project to develop excellent mechanized models for garlic, the main crop, to reduce production costs in the nation’s top garlic-producing region. In particular, efforts are accelerating to disseminate labor-saving technologies for planting work, which has been the least mechanized stage.

At the demonstration, three types of planters currently introduced were showcased: tractor-mounted (7-row ridging), riding cultivator-mounted (7-row ridging), and pedestrian-operated (6-row ridging).
The recently changed mechanized garlic planting method attracted much attention. It involves creating 4?5 cm deep furrows within the ridges and dropping the seeds naturally in a laid-down position, an improved method compared to the past practice of planting individual cloves upright.
Considering the varieties, soil characteristics, and cultivation technology levels of Changnyeong-gun, where most garlic is grown in paddy fields, the trend is shifting toward a mechanized cultivation model combining ridging-type planting + no mulching (using nonwoven fabric during cold periods) + irrigation.
A farmer who observed the mechanized garlic planting work said, “If mechanization utilization technologies introduced through on-site demonstrations increase awareness and acceptance, I believe we will soon see most fields planting garlic mechanically.”

County Governor Seong Nak-in stated, “In line with the government’s policy to increase mechanization rates for field crops, we will make greater efforts to disseminate mechanized garlic technologies and build infrastructure. I ask farmers to actively participate in expanding technology dissemination, especially for mechanized garlic planting, which has been lagging.”
