"Chuck Schumer, US Democratic Senate Majority Leader, Visits Korea, China, and Japan with Delegation"
Punchbowl News "Visit Expected Next Month"
Figure Leading Semiconductor Act and IRA Legislation
Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader from the U.S. Democratic Party, is scheduled to lead a bipartisan delegation to visit South Korea, China, and Japan, Bloomberg News reported on the 12th (local time), citing Democratic sources.
The news of Schumer's Asia visit was first reported by Punchbowl News, a U.S. political online media outlet, which stated that the visit could take place sometime next month.
Leader Schumer is a key figure behind the U.S. administration's Semiconductor Support Act and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). He introduced the Semiconductor Support Act and personally attended the signing ceremony with President Biden after its passage in Congress. In 2021, he extended a "love call" to Samsung Electronics to attract semiconductor factory investments to his district in New York State.
Schumer is known as a hardliner on China. In May, he announced plans to prepare legislation to restrict technology transfers to China, prevent conflicts between China and Taiwan, and strengthen regulations to stop U.S. capital from flowing to Chinese companies. At that time, he said, "We must continuously strengthen national security based on the Semiconductor Support Act model and stand against China worldwide."
Foreign media have shown interest in Schumer's upcoming visit to China, following last month’s visits by high-ranking U.S. officials including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who have taken a hawkish stance.
