After posting a daily best 6-under-par the previous day to leap up to 3rd place, just 2 strokes behind the leader, he was unable to complete a come-from-behind victory.
McIlroy recorded 4 birdies, 1 bogey, 1 double bogey, and 1 triple bogey. He started smoothly with birdies on holes 1 and 4 but was abruptly halted by a double bogey on the 7th hole (par 4). Although he recovered with a bogey on the 11th hole and a birdie on the 13th hole (both par 4), he fell out of the winning race after a triple bogey on the 16th hole (par 5), where he hit his ball into the water twice amid shot troubles. His green in regulation rate was 66.7%, with 29 putts.
