The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission Grants Operation License for Shin Hanul Unit 2... Full Operation After 6-Month Trial Run
Operating permission for Shin Hanul Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 has been granted. The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission held the 183rd full meeting at 10:30 a.m. on the 7th and decided on the final operating permission for Shin Hanul Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 located in Buk-myeon, Uljin-gun, Gyeongbuk Province. This is the first nuclear power plant operating permission under the current administration, coming 41 days after the official discussion began at the full meeting on July 28.
The resolution was made by consensus without a vote, as the majority of commissioners expressed the view that there were no issues with the safety review. However, Commissioner Kim Ho-cheol, a lawyer and co-representative of the Korean Federation for Environmental Movements, insisted on making the resolution after reviewing the accident management plan, and Commissioner Ha Jeong-gu recommended technical supplements.
Shin Hanul Unit 2 is a 1,400 MW-class Korean-type nuclear power plant (APR1400) that received construction permission in December 2011 and was completed last August. The project owner, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, applied for operating permission for Shin Hanul Units 1 and 2 on December 1, 2014.
