Samsung Electronics Launches Consumer 4TB SSD... "Optimized for High-End Gaming"
Reduces Gaming Lag and Loading Times
Thin Design Compatible with All Laptops
Samsung Electronics is introducing a new consumer solid-state drive (SSD) optimized for high-end gaming with ultra-fast data processing and high power efficiency. This product is the first model to apply Samsung Electronics' 8th-generation V-NAND technology and boasts a thin profile suitable for various laptops. Samsung Electronics plans to strengthen its market dominance by launching a variety of products in the consumer SSD market going forward.
Samsung Electronics announced on the 7th that it will release the 4-terabyte (TB) version of its high-performance consumer SSD, the '990 PRO' series. SSDs are secondary storage devices equipped with NAND flash memory, characterized by less heat generation, lower noise, and faster speeds compared to traditional hard disk drives (HDDs).
The 990 PRO series 4TB products introduced by Samsung Electronics include two models: the '990 PRO 4TB' and the '990 PRO with Heatsink 4TB,' which features enhanced cooling capabilities. Following the launch of the 990 PRO 1TB and 2TB models last October, the company has expanded consumer options by releasing the high-capacity 4TB version. As high-performance gaming and large-scale graphic tasks such as high-definition video recording and editing increase, high-performance, large-capacity SSDs have become essential.

The new product offers sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,450 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s, respectively. Random read and write speeds reach up to 1,600K IOPS (input/output operations per second) and 1,550K IOPS. It provides the fastest random read speed among consumer SSDs based on PCIe (high-speed input/output interface) 4.0. This reduces stuttering and loading times in high-end gaming.
Based on Samsung Electronics' '1-terabit (Tb) 8th-generation V-NAND' high-density stacking process, the SSD is designed with a single-sided layout, making it thinner than double-sided SSDs. It can be installed in all laptops, including some slim models. This is the first time Samsung Electronics has applied 8th-generation V-NAND technology to its consumer SSD lineup.
Power efficiency has also improved by up to 50% compared to the previous generation. A nickel-coated controller has been applied to efficiently manage heat dissipation. The 990 PRO includes a heat spreader sheet, while the 990 PRO with Heatsink is equipped with a heatsink to maintain optimal temperatures in various environments.
Samsung Electronics plans to continue expanding its market dominance by launching innovative consumer SSDs that reflect diverse consumer needs. The company has held the number one market share since 2013 after entering the consumer SSD market in 2010. According to market research firm Omdia, its market share in the first quarter was 39.1%.
Han-gu Son, Executive Director of the Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics' Memory Business Division, said, "The 990 PRO series 4TB is the optimal product for gamers and creative professionals handling large-capacity, high-definition data," adding, "High-performance NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory express) SSDs are not a choice but a necessity." NVMe is a protocol designed to enhance the performance and design flexibility of servers and PCs equipped with PCIe-based SSDs.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is strengthening services for SSD users. 'Samsung Magician' is software that keeps SSD firmware and drive settings up to date and optimizes power and performance for each user. It is scheduled to be updated to version 8.0 this month, integrating general SSDs, portable SSDs, memory cards, and USB flash drives.
