President Yoon Suk-yeol will unveil a vision for cooperation between Korea and the ASEAN region at the ASEAN Summit and the ASEAN+3 (Korea-China-Japan) Summit on the 6th. The strategy is to implement the ASEAN regional cooperation agreed upon last month at Camp David by President Yoon, U.S. President Joe Biden, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, while also using this as an opportunity to deepen economic cooperation and secure future growth engines.
Kim Eun-hye, Senior Secretary for Public Relations at the Presidential Office, held a briefing on the 5th (local time) at a press center set up in a hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, stating, "President Yoon is attending this ASEAN Summit with a determination to play a leading role in opening a new era of cooperation between Korea and ASEAN."
First, President Yoon plans to announce cooperation measures with ASEAN countries, as the three leaders of Korea, the U.S., and Japan agreed last month at Camp David to form ASEAN-centered norms based on joint capabilities for the prosperity and security of the Indo-Pacific region.
Senior Secretary Kim explained, "The ASEAN Summit held in Jakarta, Indonesia, over a 3-night, 4-day schedule starting today will serve as an opportunity to implement this agreement at the first multilateral meeting since Camp David."
She added, "The Camp David trilateral cooperation system among Korea, the U.S., and Japan will demonstrate joint leadership and make a responsible contribution to establishing a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region. This includes areas such as development cooperation, maritime security enhancement, and advanced digital technology. We believe that ASEAN’s role in norm formation, as the core of the Indo-Pacific region, will expand the scale of economic and trade cooperation and provide the foundation for growth."
Accordingly, discussions on strengthening cooperation in development cooperation, maritime security, and advanced digital technology are expected at this ASEAN Summit.
Regarding this, Senior Secretary Kim also mentioned, "Korea, the U.S., and Japan will jointly explore contributions and cooperation measures for various subregions and countries within the Indo-Pacific region, including ASEAN and Pacific island countries, and coordinate policies."
At the ASEAN+3 (Korea-Japan-China) Summit, President Yoon plans to establish a foothold that connects support for ASEAN with practical cooperation and future visions, acting as the coordinator among Korea, China, and Japan and as the chair country of the Korea-China-Japan Summit.

Furthermore, with about three months remaining until the vote for the host city of the 2030 World Expo, President Yoon will make every effort in the bid.
