Ulsan Ulju-gun Conducts Hanwoo DNA Identity Test Ahead of Chuseok
Ulsan City Ulju-gun will conduct Hanwoo DNA identity tests from the 6th to the 15th ahead of the Chuseok holiday.
This test is being promoted to prevent the fraudulent sale of dairy cows, beef cattle, and imported beef as Hanwoo during the Chuseok holiday.
The DNA identity test utilizes the fact that each individual has a different genetic (DNA) structure to analyze the genes of samples collected from livestock products assigned with individual identification numbers.
By comparing the DNA analysis results extracted from samples at each stage of breeding, slaughtering, processing, and sales, it is confirmed whether the DNA matches that of the individual registered with the traceability number in the traceability system.
The inspection targets a total of 340 places, including meat packaging processing businesses and meat sales businesses, which are obligated to comply with the livestock product traceability system. Priority will be given to selecting businesses suspected of violating the traceability system, such as those that failed the identity test in the past three years, and a total of 30 samples will be collected and tested.
Ulju-gun plans to impose administrative measures such as fines if the Hanwoo DNA test results do not match. In addition, for businesses that have been fined or penalized more than twice a year, information such as the name, location, and representative's name of the violating business will be disclosed for one year on the websites of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, city/county/district offices, and the Korea Consumer Agency.
