Lee Gyun-yong, the nominee for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, has been embroiled in allegations of using "dad's chance" after it was revealed that his son interned at Kim & Chang, the largest law firm in South Korea, when he was a 20-year-old university student.

View original imageAccording to the legal community on the 31st, Lee's son, Lee Mo (34), listed on his social media (SNS) career section that he worked as an intern at Kim & Chang for one month in July 2009. Lee explained, "During the internship, I reviewed and edited documents related to antitrust and competition law," and "I participated in a case study concerning a financial debt dispute between two automobile companies."
Born in 1989, Lee majored in economics, not law, at a university in the United States. Additionally, he noted in his career section that after completing his internship at Kim & Chang, he worked as an intern for six months from August 2009 at a domestic private equity fund management company. At that time, the nominee was a presiding judge at the Gwangju High Court.

Regarding the "dad's chance" allegations, the nominee's side explained, "The nominee's son applied for and worked at Kim & Chang's internship program on his own judgment before enlisting in the military," adding, "The nominee was not involved in the process and does not know the exact circumstances of his selection." They also stated, "The nominee's son participated in an undergraduate internship program at Kim & Chang, along with more than 10 other undergraduates," and "He applied for the internship at Kim & Chang, where many lawyers, certified public accountants, and tax accountants work, because he wanted to learn about the realities of work such as M&A, which he had been interested in."
