In China, following the tropical fruit durian, the demand for palm fruit juice (coconut water) is explosively increasing.
On the 31st (local time), according to China Central Television (CCTV), palm fruit juice has become popular as a summer beverage this year, leading to a surge in sales. On one online purchasing platform, group purchase orders for palm fruit juice increased by more than 300% compared to last year, and the number of online stores handling it grew by 368%.
Due to the explosive demand from Chinese consumers, the farm price of palm fruit juice, which was 100 yuan (about 18,000 won) per ton, jumped to 4,000 yuan (about 725,000 won), an increase of about 40 times.
A representative of a palm fruit juice producer in Wenchang City, Hainan Province, said, "Since 2020, we have imported palm fruits to sell the pulp, but at that time, no one wanted the juice, so we had to pay to dispose of it." He added, "Recently, the price has risen from 100 yuan per ton to 4,000 yuan."
A beverage company in Xinyu City, Jiangxi Province, increased its single palm fruit juice production line to seven this year. The company’s CEO, Luan Zhaoping, said, "We have increased palm fruit juice production by 600% compared to last year, producing more than 100 tons per day," and added, "All inventory is sold out within three days of production."
Before the Palm Fruit Craze in China, There Was the 'Durian' Craze
On social networking services (SNS), posts continue to appear stating that "after durian, palm fruit has become the symbol of tropical fruits." Earlier, in China, the rapidly rising popularity of durian this year even gave rise to the new term "Durian Freedom."
In general, in China, the term "Cherry Freedom" was often used to mean "having an economically comfortable level to afford expensive fruits." This expression refers to having the economic ability to easily buy relatively expensive imported fruits like cherries. However, palm fruit has now replaced cherries following durian.
