Samsung Heavy Industries Also Captures Carbon and Buries It in the Sea... Expanding Marine Business with CCS Technology
Joint Development of MISC and Carbon Storage and Injection Facilities
Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 30th that it received basic certification for the 'Floating CO2 Storage Unit (FCSU)' from DNV, a Norwegian classification society, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The FCSU, jointly developed by Samsung Heavy Industries and global offshore energy solutions company MISC, measures 330m in length and 64m in width, and is equipped with a high-pressure tank capacity capable of storing 100,000㎥ of liquefied carbon dioxide at temperatures below minus 50 degrees Celsius.

View original imageThe injection module mounted on the upper part of the hull can send 5 million tons per annum (MTPA) of carbon dioxide deep into the seabed. Samsung Heavy Industries explained that this amount is equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 3.3 million passenger cars over one year. The annual carbon dioxide emission per passenger car is 1.5 tons, based on an annual driving distance of 15,000 km.
Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) technology captures and stores carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for permanent isolation and is gaining attention as an effective solution for achieving global carbon neutrality.
Since January this year, Samsung Heavy Industries and MISC have been conducting research on CCS product technology and feasibility analysis. MISC plans to develop business models for storing carbon dioxide in depleted offshore wells and gas fields worldwide, including Malaysia, while Samsung Heavy Industries will supply the FCSU, establishing a cooperative framework.
