Repeated Patient Escape Attempts at Gimhae Psychiatric Hospital... 1 Seriously Injured, 1 Dead
In a psychiatric hospital in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, a patient died after falling while attempting to escape by tearing off the window of the smoking room.
According to the Gimhae Western Police Station on the 30th, a man in his 60s, Mr. A, tried to escape unauthorized through the window of the hospital's 6th-floor smoking room at 6:55 p.m. on the 28th and fell outside the window.
Mr. A had been hospitalized since May for symptoms including alcohol addiction.
On the day of the incident, Mr. A tore off the acrylic panel of the window and used a rope made by tying his clothes together to climb out the window.
A hospital official said, "Upon hearing patients say 'someone is escaping,' we went outside, but Mr. A had already fallen."
Mr. A was rushed back to the hospital and was receiving treatment but eventually passed away.
A rope made of clothes used by Mr. A for the escape was found at the fall site.
It was revealed that Mr. A had frequently expressed to other patients his desire to escape.
The police estimate that after coming out the window using clothes, Mr. A slipped and fell while climbing down a rainwater pipe installed on the wall.
At the same hospital, at around 4:50 a.m. on the 27th, another man in his 60s, Mr. B, partially damaged the bathroom window bars and attempted to escape using a rope made of clothes, but also fell.
Mr. B suffered serious injuries, including a broken leg, but his life is not in danger.
The police believe that the rope Mr. B was holding onto broke under his weight, causing the fall.
