Seocho-gu Operates Sewage Odor Reduction System Around Nambu Bus Terminal Area
District operates 'Unmanned Remote Real-Time Ventilation Control System' using negative pressure on manholes and rainwater inlets... Installed 24 odor reduction devices, removing odors from over 370 manholes across a total length of 4.6 km with 150,000㎥ capacity
Seocho-gu (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) has started operating a sewage odor reduction system using negative pressure to suppress odors and airborne bacteria generated from sewage manholes and rainwater inlets.
The district's "sewage odor reduction system" is a type of blocking device that prevents odors from escaping outside through manholes and rainwater inlets by using negative pressure. In other words, it is a real-time ventilation control system that creates negative pressure to automatically suction odors, then discharges the air through an outlet after going through a deodorization process.
The operation area covers a total length of 4.6 km within a 150,000㎡ area near Exit 6 of Nambu Bus Terminal Station. Twenty-four odor reduction devices were installed throughout this area to prevent odors from leaking out of about 370 sewage manholes and rainwater inlets.
A district official explained, "This system is the largest nationwide negative pressure-based sewage odor reduction system targeting blocks."
Until now, this area has been inconvenient for residents passing through and nearby merchants due to odors from sewage manholes and rainwater inlets. Especially during the rainy season, the odor is overwhelming, leading to many complaints.
Accordingly, the district completed installation of this system last April and conducted a two-month pilot test. As a result, out of 393 rainwater inlets in the area, 376 showed a significant reduction in hydrogen sulfide emissions, which is the main cause of the odor. It also proved highly effective in preventing the spread of airborne bacteria and pests. A caf? employee in the area said, "Previously, odors would come up from the rainwater inlets, so we used to cover them when it wasn’t raining, but now even without covers, there is no smell, which is great."
In the future, the district plans to expand this negative pressure-based sewage odor reduction system to large blocks with many odor complaints based on the results.
Last year, the district was selected as the "Best District" in the "Seoul City Sewage Odor Reduction Promotion Autonomous District Evaluation," and is striving to create the cleanest and most odor-free pleasant city in Seoul.
