Expectations for Easing US-China Tensions Spur Cautious Sentiment
Individuals and Institutions 'Buyers'
The KOSPI and KOSDAQ closed higher on the 29th amid expectations that tensions between the United States and China would ease. However, the top two market capitalization stocks in both markets ended lower or flat.
The KOSPI finished at 2,552.16, up 0.34% (8.75 points) from the previous day. The KOSPI opened at 2,550.76, up 0.29% (7.35 points), and maintained an upward trend without significant fluctuations throughout the day.
At the start of trading, individual investors were the sole buyers, but institutions turned to buying as well. Individuals and institutions net purchased 47.1 billion KRW and 65.9 billion KRW, respectively. Conversely, foreign investors were the sole net sellers with 160.6 billion KRW. In the futures market, foreign investors were the sole buyers with 131.2 billion KRW, while individuals and institutions sold 62.0 billion KRW and 254.4 billion KRW, respectively.
The top 10 stocks by market capitalization showed mixed performance. SK Hynix (+2.33%) and NAVER (+2.11%) stood out with gains. POSCO Future M (-3.60%) and POSCO Holdings (-1.69%) had relatively larger declines. Samsung Electronics, the largest by market capitalization, closed flat at 66,800 KRW.
The KOSDAQ closed at 916.24, up 0.75% (6.86 points) from the previous day. It opened at 911.94, up 0.28% (2.56 points), and maintained an upward trend. In the KOSDAQ market, foreign and institutional investors net purchased 131.2 billion KRW and 29.1 billion KRW, respectively, while individual investors were the sole net sellers with 152.7 billion KRW.
The top 10 stocks by market capitalization mostly ended higher. Only EcoPro (-2.71%), EcoPro BM (-4.06%), and L&F (-0.42%) closed lower.

Lee Kyung-min, a researcher at Daishin Securities, explained, "The KOSPI continued its rebound in line with the strong U.S. stock market the previous day, but the recent sluggish trading volume somewhat limited the KOSPI's upward momentum. As we approach the end and beginning of the month, cautious sentiment is emerging ahead of major economic indicator releases."
