Jindo-gun 'Cheomchalsan Bongsu Site' Announced for Designation as Nationally Designated Cultural Heritage Site
Important Military and Communication Facilities of the Joseon Dynasty... Scheduled for Official Designation Notice in October
Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 28th that the 'Jindo Cheomchalsan Bongsu Site,' located at the summit of Cheomchalsan in Uisin-myeon, is scheduled to be designated as a National Registered Cultural Heritage Historic Site.
On the 25th, the Cultural Heritage Administration announced the preliminary designation of 16 bongsu sites, including the Jindo Cheomchalsan Bongsu Site, as 'Route 5 Direct Beacon' National Registered Cultural Heritage Historic Sites.
Bongsu sites are important military and communication facilities from the Joseon Dynasty, focusing on fortress functions. They demonstrate the military and communication systems of that era and are recorded in various historical documents, including the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty.
In particular, the Jindo Cheomchalsan Bongsu is strategically located connecting the West Sea and the South Sea, making it an excellent position for monitoring pirate invasions.
The final designation as a National Registered Cultural Heritage Historic Site is expected to be officially announced in October after a 30-day public notice period.
If the Cheomchalsan Bongsu Site is designated as a National Registered Cultural Heritage Historic Site, it will become the third historic site in Jindo-gun, following the Jindo Yongjang Fortress and Jindo Namdojin Fortress, which were built to resist Mongol invasions.
A representative from the Jindo-gun Culture, Arts, and Sports Department stated, “In addition to the Jindo Cheomchalsan Bongsu, investigations are ongoing on the Yeoguisan Bongsu and the intermediate beacons (Ganbong, 間烽) connecting the islands of the southwestern coast. We will do our best to restore the bongsu system of our region.”
