The 2023 Arts Center Cultural Arts Education Support Program (Appreciation Type) is an educational project that teaches children and adolescents the historical background, humanities knowledge, and appreciation methods necessary for enjoying artistic performances, aiming to enhance their ability to enjoy and appreciate culture and arts through attending performances.

The three programs completed from July 24 to mid-August were ‘Colorful Dancing Kids’, ‘Gugak Chamber Music Playground: Gugak Department Store’, and ‘Sweet Jazz Class’. Each program ran for 4 weeks with two sessions, involving a total of 120 youths ranging from lower-grade elementary students to middle school students.

Lower-grade elementary students participated in ballet classes, upper-grade elementary students in gugak (traditional Korean music), and middle school students in jazz classes. They not only learned theory but also had hands-on experiences by touching instruments and performing, spending time becoming familiar with the arts.

After the education, participants, their families, and local residents were invited free of charge to watch performances related to the education, reinforcing the lessons learned during the classes.

The summer vacation special education programs received remarkable responses not only from the participating youths but also from their observing parents.

“The children were able to spend their summer vacation interestingly through various cultural and artistic experiences, and continuing to watch performances made the cultural arts education more memorable as an experience. I hope opportunities for children to experience diverse cultural arts will continue to be created,” said one parent.

The person in charge of the education at Yeongdeok Culture and Tourism Foundation also stated, “The genres of culture and arts experienced during school years remain familiar and enjoyable even in adulthood. We conducted this program to allow children and adolescents in Yeongdeok to experience a variety of cultural arts evenly. All participating students enjoyed it, and many expressed a desire for the program to continue.”

Yeongdeok Culture and Tourism Foundation announced that they plan to upgrade the appreciation-type cultural arts education program next year and continue it annually.
