What Are the Key Features of Jongno-gu Smart Security Lights That Ensure a Safe Way Home?
Jongno-gu (District Mayor Jeong Munheon) is planning to install traditional Hanok-style ‘smart security lights’ at a total of 381 locations in Seonggyungwan-ro 5-gil and the Hyehwa-dong area, designated as women’s safe return zones, by November.
To prevent crime and create a bright and pleasant nighttime return path, the project notably enhances safety by linking with the Ansim-i app’s safe return monitoring service. When pedestrians activate the safe return monitoring service on the app and pass near a smart security light, the light’s brightness automatically increases, illuminating the dark night path brightly.
In case of an accident or emergency, pressing the emergency report menu within the Ansim-i app immediately notifies the Jongno-gu Integrated Control Center. Nearby security lights then flash, allowing responding police officers to quickly locate the reporter. The smart security light management department can also check the status of the lights in real-time using PCs and mobile phones, enabling proactive maintenance.
While promoting this project, the district considered that Hyehwa-dong is adjacent to major tourist attractions and rich in various cultural tourism resources, choosing to upgrade the lights with a ‘Hanok-style design.’ This is expected to contribute to improving the street’s aesthetic appearance.

Additionally, to prevent residents from suffering light pollution such as sleep disturbances, the brightness of the security lights is carefully reduced by 50% during late-night hours from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. District Mayor Jeong Munheon stated, “We plan to complete the installation of smart security lights in the Hyehwa-dong area by November and gradually expand this project focusing on safety-vulnerable areas. We will continue to devise various measures to create a safe community where residents can live with peace of mind.”
