'Running Asia, Racing Together with Gumi!' ... Gumi City Holds Plaque Ceremony for Asia Athletics Promotion Team
On the 23rd, Gumi City in Gyeongbuk held the 'Asia Athletics Promotion Team Plaque Ceremony' at the City Sports Hall, with 20 attendees including Mayor Kim Jang-ho, City Council Chairman Ahn Joo-chan, and City Sports Association Chairman Yoon Sang-hoon, marking the official start of preparations for the competition.
The Asia Athletics Promotion Team (headed by Jang In-su, concurrently Director of the Sports Promotion Division) consists of 6 members in 2 teams and will play a central role in the successful hosting of the event by gradually expanding its scale through establishing and operating the organizing committee and formulating comprehensive plans for the competition preparations.
The 2025 Gumi Asia Athletics Championships are scheduled to take place over five days from May 27 to 31, 2025, with approximately 1,200 athletes from 45 countries competing in 45 events.
As the largest and most prestigious athletics competition in Asia, South Korea has successfully hosted the event in Seoul in 1975 and Incheon in 2005. After 20 years, Gumi will be the first basic local government to host the event.

Mayor Kim Jang-ho stated, “Building on the successful experience of hosting the National Sports Festival over the past three years, along with the 2024 Gyeongbuk Provincial Sports Festival and the Korea-China-Japan Junior Comprehensive Sports Competition, we will add to our know-how and work hard to secure national and provincial budgets to prepare the event without any setbacks.”
