Kim Byunghwan, New 1st Vice Minister of Economy and Finance... An Economic Policy Expert with Strong Drive
Experienced in Both Financial and Macroeconomic Policies
Kim Byunghwan (52), the newly appointed 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, is a representative economic policy official who has worked extensively in both financial and macroeconomic departments.
Vice Minister Kim entered public service in 1993 after passing the 37th Administrative Examination. He began his career at the former Ministry of Finance and Economy, working in the Financial Policy Office’s Securities Affairs Division and Securities System Division. He then served in various macroeconomic policy-related departments at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, including Director of the Capital Market Division, Director of the Economic Analysis Division, and Director of the Comprehensive Policy Division. He also developed crisis management skills by overseeing response efforts during the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak.
After serving as Director General of the Economic Policy Bureau, which oversees macroeconomic policy, he worked as the Economic and Financial Secretary at the Presidential Office with the launch of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration. Following this personnel appointment, he has returned to the Ministry of Economy and Finance as the 1st Vice Minister.
He is known for his strong drive and clear sense of direction when implementing policies. Having worked at institutions such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), he is also recognized for his international perspective.
