Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Establishes 'Korea Picture Book Award'... Integrated Export Support Provided
Eight Works Selected Annually... Prize Money Worth 100 Million KRW

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Publication Industry Promotion Agency announced on the 22nd the establishment of the 'Korea Picture Book Award' to enhance the recognition of related authors and works and support exports. With major international awards such as Baek Heena (Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award) and Lee Suji (Hans Christian Andersen Award) raising the status of domestic picture books, they decided to create an award and integrated export support plan befitting their reputation.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism selects eight winners annually: two Grand Prize winners (Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award with a prize of 15 million KRW), five Special Prize winners (Director of the Publication Promotion Agency Award with a prize of 7 million KRW), and one Newcomer Award winner (7 million KRW), distributing a total prize money of 100 million KRW. Additionally, 3.5 million KRW is separately awarded to the publishers of the winning works. Applications are accepted through the Korea Picture Book Award submission system until the 22nd of next month. The Grand Prize is for domestically created picture books first published between January 2022 and the end of June 2023. Winners will be announced at the end of November after expert evaluation.

The winning works will also receive benefits such as overseas marketing and export support. The Ministry explained, "We plan to promote picture books overseas through the integrated publication export platform and the English webzine 'K-Book Trend,' and provide opportunities such as participation in overseas copyright markets and translation of summaries and samples." They added, "We aim to grant authors honor and prestige as creators and provide publishers with stepping stones for overseas expansion to create a stable export environment."
