Gyeonggi-do to Create Korea's First Climate Crisis Response Platform
Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon is delivering a greeting at the RE100 Platform Construction Forum on the 16th.

This portal will allow users to view the total carbon emissions and absorption amounts in Gyeonggi Province numerically to verify carbon reduction effects. It is also expected to be highly effective in selecting locations for solar power facilities, renewable energy trading, climate environment policy formulation, heatwave response, and heavy rain countermeasure planning. This objective and scientific data-based climate crisis response platform is the first of its kind in South Korea.
On the 16th, Gyeonggi Province held a forum at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office jointly with the Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Committee and the Gyeonggi Research Institute to announce the plan to build the 'Gyeonggi RE100 Platform.' About 300 people attended the forum, including members of the provincial council, carbon neutrality and green growth committee members, private experts, provincial and city/county officials, environmental organizations, and residents.
The Gyeonggi RE100 Platform is a project to build spatial information on climate and energy sectors across the entire province using aerial LiDAR, hyperspectral satellite imagery, building energy usage data, and more, as part of the Gyeonggi RE100 promotion strategy announced last April.
Aerial LiDAR is equipment that emits laser pulses and measures the distance to objects by receiving the light reflected from surrounding objects, enabling the creation of three-dimensional images and analyzing the spatial location of reflection points to survey terrain and absorption sources (trees).
Hyperspectral satellite imagery records wavelengths of light beyond the visible spectrum, analyzing the unique optical properties and absorption and reflection characteristics of materials to identify land cover and vegetation conditions.
Gyeonggi Province plans to start the platform project in September and launch carbon emission sector services and RE100 services in the first half of next year.
At the forum, Gyeonggi Province also presented various policy utilization plans based on the Gyeonggi RE100 Platform as a comprehensive climate and energy data platform.
Additionally, the province is considering the introduction of a total carbon volume system for development projects in the mid-to-long term. This system requires reforestation or monetary compensation equivalent to the damage caused by various development projects that harm forests and other green areas.
Moreover, using aerial LiDAR and hyperspectral satellite imagery, the province will analyze optimal locations and potential capacity for renewable energy on buildings and idle lands within the province.
Kim Dong-yeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, expressed, "Gyeonggi Province is the first in South Korea to establish a climate change platform. A platform will be created where the amount of energy and carbon emissions from each building in Gyeonggi, the level of carbon reduction, and the potential capacity to produce renewable energy can be viewed at a glance."

He added, "We are not just talking hollowly about responding to climate change, but we aim to create policies based on this scientific and data-driven platform. Based on this, we will carry out Gyeonggi RE100 steadily across four sectors: companies, industrial complexes, residents, and the public."
