The foreign ministers of South Korea, the United States, and Japan held a video conference ahead of the trilateral summit scheduled for the 18th at Camp David in the United States, agreeing to strengthen security cooperation on North Korea's nuclear issue. They comprehensively discussed finalizing the "Camp David Principles," which is an agenda item for the summit, as well as regularizing trilateral summits among the three countries.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 16th, Foreign Minister Park Jin, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa held a video conference starting around 9:30 p.m. local time on the 15th to discuss key issues including the upcoming South Korea-U.S.-Japan summit.

View original imageThe three ministers particularly agreed to "strengthen security cooperation to respond to nuclear and missile threats related to North Korea and its nuclear issue," reaffirming seamless coordination among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also explained that they discussed major regional and global developments, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
At this summit, a joint statement along with the so-called "Camp David Principles," which govern trilateral relations, will be announced. It is expected that opinions on these documents were coordinated during the foreign ministers' meeting. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, "It is time to strengthen and renew the bonds among allies in various fields," adding, "We will be able to confirm a shared vision of a stable Indo-Pacific."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "The three ministers shared the recognition that the South Korea-U.S.-Japan summit will be an important milestone for trilateral cooperation and agreed to work closely to ensure a successful meeting."

During the meeting, Secretary Blinken expressed condolences over the passing of President Yoon Seok-yeol's father. Minister Park said, "I deeply mourn the loss of many lives due to the wildfire on Maui Island, Hawaii, along with Secretary Blinken and the residents," and explained, "Our government will provide humanitarian aid worth 2 million dollars."
