Gyeongnam Office of Education and Geoje City to Build Tentatively Named 'Gohyeon 1 Elementary School' with Self-Investment
A provisional elementary school named ‘Gohyeon1 Elementary School’ is planned to be built in the Gohyeon Port area of Geoje-si, Gyeongnam.
On the 14th, the Gyeongnam Office of Education and Geoje City signed a business agreement to promote the school facility complex for the establishment of the provisional Gohyeon1 Elementary School.
According to the provincial Office of Education, the school facility complex is a local living-centered space where educational, cultural, and welfare facilities are installed on the school site for use by both students and local residents.
This project efficiently utilizes physical and human resources within the region, where the local government prepares various facilities necessary for the new school, and the newly established school operates them.
The Gohyeon Port area in Geoje, where Gohyeon1 Elementary School will be built, has seen an increase in the number of students due to the port redevelopment project and the construction of over 3,700 apartment units. However, commuting conditions have been poor as students must cross the eight-lane Geoje Road and a sea pedestrian bridge, leading to demands for a new elementary school.

The provincial Office of Education, considering that the new school project would be difficult to pass the Ministry of Education’s central investment review due to the possibility of distributing students to nearby Sinhyeon Elementary and Junggok Elementary Schools, agreed with Geoje City to proceed with the school facility complex project, which allows the school to be established through an independent investment review.
Gohyeon1 Elementary School will be built at 1176 Gohyeon-dong, consisting of a total of 37 classes including 2 special classes, accommodating 751 students.
Within the 12,502㎡ school site, a 2,000㎡ complex facility will be constructed, with 55.7 billion KRW allocated for school establishment costs and 5 billion KRW for the complex facility construction.
The provincial Office of Education plans to establish a basic plan related to the new school and request a feasibility study from the Ministry of Education in January next year, considering the total project cost exceeding 50 billion KRW.
If administrative procedures proceed as planned after the feasibility study, Gohyeon1 Elementary School is expected to open in March 2028.
Park Jong-woo, Mayor of Geoje City, said, “I hope that the Office of Education and Geoje City will actively cooperate to successfully complete the construction of the school facility complex.”
