Swimmer Hwang Sun-woo Investigated by Police for 'Hit-and-Run Suspicion'... "We Have Reached a Settlement"
An Elderly Person Hit by Side Mirror During Jincheon Athlete Village Move-In
Returned to the Scene 30 Minutes After the Accident Occurred
Swimming national representative athlete Hwang Sun-woo has been confirmed to be under police investigation for a suspected hit-and-run incident.
According to the Jincheon Police Station in Chungbuk on the 14th, Yonhap News reported that swimming national representative Hwang Sun-woo is being investigated on suspicion of hitting a pedestrian while driving and fleeing the scene.
On the 13th at around 7:35 PM, Hwang is accused of hitting an elderly man in his 80s who was crossing a crosswalk with his car while entering the Jincheon National Training Center, and leaving the scene without taking any action.
There was a strong impact that broke the car's side mirror, but fortunately, the elderly man was reported to have not been seriously injured.
The police responded to the victim's report, and Hwang reportedly returned to the accident scene 30 minutes after the incident and stated, "I think I caused the accident."
A police official told Yonhap News, "We are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the accident," adding, "Since this is still at the pre-indictment investigation stage, legal review is necessary."
An official from the Korea Swimming Federation stated, "We heard from athlete Hwang Sun-woo that he passed the crosswalk to avoid a pedestrian jaywalking, initially did not realize an accident had occurred, but after confirming the side mirror was broken, he recognized the accident and returned to the scene."
They added, "He paid the hospital bills to the victim and reached a settlement. Since a settlement has been made, we believe there will be no major issues like a 'hit-and-run' as initially reported."
Meanwhile, Hwang Sun-woo won a bronze medal in the 200m freestyle at the 2023 World Swimming Championships held in Fukuoka, Japan, last July.
