Jeonnam Jangseong-gun, Focus on Full-Scale Cultivation of New Income Crop 'Lemon'
Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do is implementing tailored support to foster the income crop "lemon" as a climate change response strategy.
The county is accelerating the large-scale development of the "Jangseong Lemon" complex in line with the construction of the National Subtropical Crop Demonstration Center in Samgye-myeon, scheduled for completion in 2025.
"Lemon" is a subtropical fruit currently cultivated only in Jeju Island in Korea, with 90% of the national consumption relying on imports.
Imported lemons are treated with preservatives and wax, so securing a stable demand for domestically produced lemons is expected to be easier.
Jangseong-gun was previously selected for the "2023 Customized Future Strategy Income Crop Development Pilot Project" hosted by the Jeollanam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services.
Currently, a 5-hectare lemon cultivation complex is being established in the Samseo-myeon area. Systematic support continues, including ▲ installation of disaster-resistant demonstration greenhouses to minimize damage from natural disasters such as strong winds ▲ introduction of smart farm facilities ▲ use of eco-friendly materials.
In particular, opportunities to enhance lemon cultivation capabilities through expert training and on-site consultations have received high responses from farmers. The Jangseong-gun Agricultural Technology Center has been conducting specialized lemon education since June through crop-specific farmer research groups and small-scale farmer learning communities.
On the 4th, leading lemon farmers from Jeju Island were invited to share cultivation, facility management, and pest control methods.
Park Eon-jeong, director of the Jangseong-gun Agricultural Technology Center, said, "We provide specialized training according to cultivation periods to help resolve farmers' difficulties on-site immediately," adding, "We will do our best to establish Jangseong Lemon as a new income crop."
Meanwhile, starting next year, the second year of the project, Jangseong-gun plans to establish systematic support measures for strategic crop development, including installing energy-saving heating facilities within the greenhouses and developing lemon-based products.
