'Online Murder Threats' 115 Arrested Out of 315 Cases... 11 Detained
Investigation Includes Minors
Eleven individuals were arrested for posting 'murder threats' online, threatening an unspecified number of people.
The Cyber Investigation Division of the National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters announced on the 11th that they have arrested a man in his 20s who posted a murder threat at Sillim Station, and so far, out of a total of 315 cases, 115 cases (119 people) have been apprehended, with 11 people detained.
Recently, posts threatening to commit heinous crimes have been repeatedly posted on internet communities. The National Investigation Headquarters is actively applying criminal provisions such as threats, attempted murder, and obstruction of official duties under the Criminal Act, as posting threats of heinous crimes like murder is a matter that endangers public safety.
Juvenile offenders (aged 14 to under 19) are subject to criminal punishment through the same procedures as adults, while quasi-juveniles (aged 10 to under 14) are not subject to criminal punishment but are referred to the juvenile court of jurisdiction if criminal suspicion is recognized. Juvenile offenders receive protective measures ranging from type 1 (custody supervision) to type 10 (long-term juvenile detention, up to 2 years).

A National Police Agency official stated, “Posting threats of heinous crimes online is a serious criminal act that threatens the social community, so we are making efforts to ensure public safety through strict investigations. Although investigations are conducted in compliance with due process for those under 19, continuous attention and educational guidance for children and adolescents from related institutions such as the Ministry of Education, schools, and families are necessary beforehand.”
