'Premeditated Murder' Suspects in Custody Increase to 8... Women Who Announced Murders at Dongdaegu Station and Bundang Detained
The number of suspects arrested for posting online messages predicting 'murder' or 'weapon rampage' targeting unspecified individuals has increased to eight.
According to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office on the 10th, the Daegu District Prosecutors' Office arrested a man in his 30s who was wandering near Dongdaegu Station with a memo containing content about weapons and murder. The Suwon District Prosecutors' Office arrested a woman in her 30s who predicted she would kill 20 men near Bundang Seohyeon Station.
Following a weapon rampage incident near Sillim Station in Gwanak-gu, Seoul on the 21st of last month, prosecutors and police have been tracking and arresting individuals who posted similar threats online, assessing the specificity and seriousness of the crimes before detaining them. These suspects face charges including threats, obstruction of official duties by deception, and attempted murder.
On the 6th, Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok held an emergency meeting at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office and instructed, "Prosecutors nationwide should apply all applicable criminal laws, including attempted murder and obstruction of official duties by deception, in addition to charges of threats, against online threats targeting the general public. They should thoroughly investigate the motives, backgrounds, means, and methods of the crimes and actively consider detention during investigations."
As of the day before, prosecutors and police have detained six individuals on charges including threats, obstruction of official duties by deception, and attempted murder for posting online threats predicting 'murder' or 'weapon rampage' targeting the general public.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, upon police request, detained a 26-year-old man on the 27th of last month who threatened to kill 20 women near Sillim Station, Seoul. Additionally, a 19-year-old man who threatened to kill police officers and was found carrying two kitchen knives near Seoul Express Bus Terminal Station was detained on the 6th, and a 31-year-old man who predicted a weapon rampage near Hyehwa Station was detained on the 7th. A 29-year-old man who threatened a weapon rampage near Sillim Station was detained on the 8th.
The Incheon District Prosecutors' Office detained a 40-year-old man on the 7th who threatened to kill 10 women near Bupyeong Rodeo Street, and the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office detained a 19-year-old man on the 8th who threatened a weapon rampage at an amusement park.
