A woman who posted a 'murder threat' stating she would stab dozens of men with a weapon at Seohyeon Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, was arrested by the police.
The Cyber Investigation Division of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency announced on the 9th that they had detained a woman in her 30s, identified as A, on charges of obstruction of official duties by intimidation and threats. On the same day, the court held a pre-arrest hearing (warrant review) for A and issued an arrest warrant.
A is accused of posting a message on the online community DC Inside bulletin board around 7 p.m. on the 3rd, the day the 'Bundang weapon rampage incident' occurred, stating, "Going to stab 20 Han-nam at Seohyeon Station on Friday." Along with the post, she also uploaded a photo holding a weapon. 'Han-nam' is an abbreviation for Korean men and is used as a derogatory and hateful term against Korean males.
After conducting an investigation, the police urgently arrested A at her residence around 6 p.m. on the 7th. However, upon inspecting the inside of her home, no weapons were found, the police explained. It is known that A used a weapon photo circulating on the internet.
Police investigations revealed that A had posted multiple misogynistic messages online in addition to the aforementioned post. Some of these contained content that could be recognized as actual threats, and the police included these in the criminal charges. Regarding her motive, A stated, "I posted the message after seeing news that women suffered significant harm on that day (the day of the Bundang weapon rampage incident) and wanted to retaliate against men."
As such 'murder threat' posts continue to spread online like a trend, the police are preparing for any possible incidents. Numerous posts similar to those written by A have appeared, prompting the police to deploy riot police and many local officers inside and around Seohyeon Station. Additionally, counterterrorism equipment such as police special forces armed with rifles and armored vehicles were deployed at Seohyeon Station and several other densely populated facilities.
Meanwhile, as of 10 a.m. on the 9th, the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency announced that they had apprehended 31 individuals who posted murder threat messages, heightening social anxiety due to the recent wave of 'murder and weapon rampage' threat posts.
The Hanam Police Station in Gyeonggi is also investigating a man in his 20s, identified as B, who posted a threat targeting a specific company. B is accused of posting on the DC Inside bulletin board around 1 p.m. on the 8th, stating, "I will kill 9 employees of ○○ Entertainment at Seoul Forest Station."
