According to the NYPD, an Asian couple visiting New York from Nevada sat down on the subway seats when three teenage girls sitting across from them pointed fingers and made insulting remarks. The Asian couple was accompanied by their 11-year-old twin daughters.
The girls approached the Asian family, stomped their feet, appeared to be shouting, then returned to their seats and clapped their hands.
They then hurled insults such as "Go back to your country" and sarcastically said, "I might hit you in front of your daughters."
As the aggressive behavior and language continued, the husband stepped in and asked, "Could you please use more appropriate language?" to urge restraint. However, they responded with even more aggressive threats.
When the girls realized that another passenger on the same train car was recording the situation on their cellphone, they rushed at the passenger, grabbed their hair, knocked them to the floor, and threw punches.
In response, the Asian woman among the couple tried to protect the other passenger who was recording with a cellphone, but the teenage girl also assaulted the Asian woman.
The Asian woman suffered damage including broken glasses and hair being pulled out.
The assault reportedly continued until the subway stopped at the next station. When the train stopped, passengers helped the victims get off to protect them. The assault victims exited the subway and reported the incident to the police.
The NYPD is treating this incident as a hate crime based on racial discrimination.
