Yoon on Emergency Standby for Typhoon Khanun Accompanied by Strong Winds and Heavy Rain
Yoon to Receive Typhoon Path and Situation Reports at Presidential Office and Residence
Likely to Instruct Minimizing Casualties and Ensuring Safety at Jamboree Event
President Yoon Suk-yeol plans to be on emergency standby on the 9th to receive reports from the presidential office and government ministries regarding Typhoon Khanun, the 6th typhoon heading north toward the Korean Peninsula, and to give instructions on response measures.
According to officials from the presidential office, President Yoon will receive reports from presidential aides and relevant ministers at the Yongsan Presidential Office and the Hannam-dong residence until Typhoon Khanun moves away from the Korean Peninsula.
Typhoon Khanun is forecast to make landfall through the coast of Tongyeong, Gyeongnam, in the early morning of the 10th and then slowly pass through the Korean Peninsula, raising concerns about potentially severe damage. Currently, Khanun is passing through the Kyushu region of Japan, accompanied by heavy rain with a maximum expected daily precipitation of 400mm and strong winds with maximum gusts of 40m/s.
An official from the presidential office stated, "As the typhoon directly hits the Korean Peninsula, the presidential office is maintaining an emergency work system, and President Yoon will also be on emergency standby."
On the same day, President Yoon is scheduled to receive reports on the typhoon’s path and preparedness status from the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH). The day before, President Yoon presided over an emergency inspection meeting at the Yongsan Presidential Office with presidential aides, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, ministers from 17 ministries, and mayors and governors of cities and provinces, both in person and via video conference.
The government plans to focus on minimizing casualties by preparing for landslides caused by weakened ground due to the heavy monsoon rains last month, potential damage to infrastructure such as roads and railways from the typhoon, and the possibility of rivers and dams overflowing. In particular, the government is concentrating its efforts on proactive control and rapid evacuation in high-risk areas.
The CDSCH is considering recommending adjustments to commuting hours and advising people to refrain from travel to prevent damage during the time the typhoon directly strikes.
In addition, President Yoon is expected to emphasize government-wide operational support to ensure the safe completion of schedules for scouts from various countries participating in the World Scout Jamboree. Currently, the jamboree participants have left the Saemangeum campsite and have been dispersed to eight cities and provinces nationwide, participating in on-site programs organized by local governments. On the afternoon of the 11th, a K-pop concert and closing ceremony will be held at the Seoul Sangam World Cup Stadium, so related safety measures are also expected to be ordered.

Depending on the typhoon preparedness and damage situation, President Yoon may also be on emergency standby at the Yongsan Presidential Office working room.
