Wando-gun Accelerates Preparation of Basic Plan for Establishing National Warm-Temperate Forest Arboretum
Forest Service, Jeollanam-do, and Wando-gun Hold Kick-off Meeting for Basic Plan
Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do held a kickoff meeting for the basic plan project of the National Subtropical Arboretum development on the 7th.
According to the county on the 9th, about 30 people attended the kickoff meeting, including related organizations such as the Korea Forest Service, Jeollanam-do, and Wando-gun, as well as the service company and advisory group. Moving away from a formal report meeting, substantial discussions were held to ensure the successful promotion of the National Subtropical Arboretum development project.

The basic plan is a procedure to establish a detailed plan covering the overall project, including fundamental policies, concepts, ideas, and layout, which is the first step in project promotion and a very important stage linked to the success or failure of the project.
As the National Subtropical Arboretum is expected to serve as a stepping stone to revitalize the region's tourism and economy, all related organizations and advisory groups carefully suggested development directions, and the service company stated, “Based on this content, we will prepare various alternatives to enhance the completeness of the basic plan.”
Kim Yong-gwan, Director of the Forest Protection Bureau at the Korea Forest Service, said, “The Korea Forest Service’s policy is to develop the National Subtropical Arboretum in a way that contributes to the region. If a distinctive National Subtropical Arboretum reflecting the local culture is established, many people will visit Wando-gun. Please approach the project with a sense of mission,” adding, “Wando-gun’s role is very important, so we ask for active cooperation and support.”
Park Eun-jae, Director of the Forest Recreation Division of Wando-gun, said, “For our county to leap forward as a more splendid marine tourism hub city, the National Subtropical Arboretum development project must succeed, so the county will do its best.”
Meanwhile, the National Subtropical Arboretum development project is a large-scale national project investing 147.5 billion KRW of national funds in the Wando Arboretum site (381 hectares), which is currently operated as a provincial arboretum.
After passing the preliminary feasibility study at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance’s Fiscal Project Evaluation Committee in December last year, the feasibility study and basic plan project have been underway since July.
In particular, related organizations such as the Korea Forest Service, Jeollanam-do, and Wando-gun have formed a separate working-level council to efficiently and swiftly address pending issues.
It is expected that when the arboretum opens, hundreds of thousands of visitors will come annually, generating over 1 trillion KRW in production added value and creating more than 10,000 jobs, resulting in significant ripple effects in the region.
