Number of Dengue Fever Patients in New Delhi, India Hits Six-Year High in July
The number of dengue fever patients in New Delhi, the capital of India, reached its highest level in six years since 2018 in July.
On the 4th (local time), Indian media including the daily Hindustan Times reported that the number of dengue fever patients in New Delhi until the 28th of last month was 121, the highest number of cases recorded in July since 2018.
Dengue fever is an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes carrying the dengue virus, showing symptoms such as fever, rash, and joint pain.
The number of dengue fever patients in New Delhi in July was 11 in 2020, 16 in 2021, and 26 last year. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, dengue fever surveillance and spread were limited, resulting in relatively fewer patients.
The cumulative number of dengue fever patients from January to July was 49 in 2018, 40 in 2019, 31 in 2020, 52 in 2021, 169 in 2022, and 243 this year.
One of the causes of the increase in dengue fever patients is attributed to flooding in some areas of the city due to the overflow of the Yamuna River, which passes through New Delhi, caused by monsoon heavy rains in northern India.
