Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) held a communication session on the morning of the 2nd at the large auditorium of the Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Annex with 90 university student part-timers participating in the 2023 summer vacation program.
Notably, this year’s university student part-timers were assigned a task beyond the usual repetitive departmental duties; they were tasked with proposing ideas for district administration while working.
The communication meeting proceeded with ▲awarding certificates for excellent policy proposals ▲presentations of outstanding policy proposals ▲and a dialogue with the district mayor. It was an opportunity to encourage the efforts of the student part-timers who had carried out policy proposal assignments and to have an open and honest conversation about questions regarding district administration.
Before the meeting, participants held a ‘Policy Proposal Presentation (7.26.)’. Under the theme ‘Policies for Yeongdeungpo-gu We Create’, 12 teams gave free presentations within five minutes. As a result, the following were selected as excellent proposals: ▲Measures to Establish a Complete Stop on Right Turns (Grand Prize) ▲Yeongdeungpo-gu Support Policy for Slow Learners and Children with Learning Disabilities ‘Hope Wings Project’ (Excellence Award) ▲Improvement Plan for Local Children’s Centers ‘Safe Yeongdeungpo for Children’ (Merit Award). Certificates for these outstanding policy proposals were awarded and presentations were made at the meeting.
During the dialogue with the district mayor, various topics were freely discussed in an open atmosphere, including ▲major social welfare policies of Yeongdeungpo-gu ▲hopes for better job postings for youth on the district office’s job site ▲youth policies such as the plan to relocate the 2nd Sejong Cultural Center to Yeouido Park and the plan to build an Arts Center on public land in Mullae-dong following the relocation, as well as proposals closely related to daily life and the future of Yeongdeungpo.
Mayor Choi listened attentively to the vivid voices of the university students and formed a consensus. He expressed gratitude and encouragement for the students’ diligent work on the front lines of public service despite the hot weather, including removing illegal advertisements, disposing of discarded furniture, and making welfare calls to check on flood damage.
Mayor Choi also said that although these were new tasks for the students, thanks to their best efforts, many residents have good memories. He applauded the fresh policy ideas that emerged from their vivid experiences in the short working period.
Additionally, he expressed hope that the university students, as young professionals, would use this part-time job experience to cultivate a kind mindset toward neighbors and a challenging spirit for their own futures.
One university student who attended the meeting said, “Although it was tough to perform fieldwork in the hot weather, I felt small happiness every time I was able to help residents. Also, meeting the district mayor in person, asking questions, and sharing ideas about district administration was a meaningful experience that cannot be had anywhere else.”
