Estimated Price 250 Million KRW... The First Computer Created by Jobs, 'Apple-1'
Product Created by Jobs and Wozniak in 1976
Sold for 950 Million KRW Last August
The first Apple computer, the 'Apple-1,' created by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976, has gone up for auction.
According to the New York Post and others on the 1st (local time), an Apple computer signed by Wozniak was put up for auction. RR Auction, an auction house based in Boston, USA, stated that the computer has been fully restored to working condition and will be offered with a custom case featuring a built-in keyboard.
Bobby Livingston, vice president of RR, introduced it as "the legendary computer that gave birth to Apple," adding, "About 200 units were manufactured between 1976 and 1977 in Steve Jobs' garage in Los Altos, California, and approximately 175 of them were sold."
Previously, in August last year, an Apple-1 computer was sold for about 950 million KRW. Besides being a "monumental piece" in computer history, the Apple-1 holds high value because Jobs and Wozniak personally designed and assembled it.
In 1976, Jobs produced 50 units of this computer with Wozniak in his home garage and used this as capital to produce an additional 150 units to sell to retailers. Wozniak designed it, and Jobs handled sales. The two hand-soldered each component, and the market price at the time was $666 (approximately 860,000 KRW).
The bidding price for this computer, which ends on the 24th, has already exceeded $110,000 (about 142 million KRW). The final winning bid is expected to be over $200,000 (about 259 million KRW). The auction reportedly includes an Apple company check signed by Jobs and Wozniak, issued on March 19, 1976.
Meanwhile, Tim Bajarin, chairman of the technology research firm Creative Strategies, said, "It is a very rare item," adding, "The growth of the computer industry can be traced from the exhibited Apple-1." He further stated, "This computer is the legendary product that made the current Apple possible."
