Yongin Light Rail and 4 Other Urban Rail Fares to Increase by 150 Won Starting October
Gyeonggi Province will hold a public hearing to discuss the fare increase for five urban rail lines within the province.
On the 2nd, Gyeonggi Province announced that it will hold a public hearing on the 4th at the Uijeongbu Gyeonggi Northern Government Complex to discuss raising the basic fare for five urban rail lines, including the Yongin Light Rail Transit, from the current 1,250 won to 1,400 won, an increase of 150 won.
This public hearing is an administrative procedure in accordance with the Urban Rail Transit Act and related ordinances. The current system sets the scope of urban rail fares and collects opinions from various sectors including residents, experts, civic groups, and urban rail officials.
Earlier, in January, Seoul requested a fare increase for the Seoul urban rail to address operating deficits (proposing a 300 won increase in the basic fare and a 50 won increase in distance-based additional fare), prompting fare negotiations involving Gyeonggi Province, Seoul, Incheon, and Korea Railroad Corporation.
This is based on the joint agreement on the integrated transfer discount system for metropolitan public transportation made in 2007, which requires prior consultation among the four institutions?Gyeonggi Province, Seoul, Incheon, and Korea Railroad Corporation?if any one of them requests a fare increase.
Gyeonggi Province conducted eight rounds of fare negotiations with the three institutions until the 19th of last month and proposed a 150 won increase to ease the financial burden on residents.
After the public hearing, Gyeonggi Province plans to complete the related legal procedures including hearing opinions from the provincial council, review by the Consumer Policy Committee, and fare filing approval, and to implement the adjusted fares starting October 7.
Jo Chi-hyung, Director of the Gyeonggi Province Railway Operations Division, said, "Despite the increasing operating deficits of the metropolitan subway, it is fortunate that the four institutions agreed on the minimum fare increase." He added, "We will do our best to expand the railway network and ensure safe railway operations so that residents can conveniently use public transportation in the future."
