Seocho-gu Supports Insurance Enrollment for Electric Mobility Aids for People with Disabilities
District to Support Liability Compensation Costs for Accidents through Insurance Enrollment for Electric Assistive Devices for the Disabled Starting August 1
Up to 50 Million KRW Coverage per Accident for Third-Party Bodily Injury and Property Damage, Offering the Lowest Personal Contribution and Highest Coverage Amount among Local Governments Nationwide
District Mayor Jeon Seong-su: “With this insurance enrollment support for electric assistive devices, we will strive to reduce the economic burden on disabled individuals in case of accidents and improve mobility convenience.”
Seocho-gu (District Mayor Jeon Seong-su) will support insurance enrollment for electric assistive devices such as electric wheelchairs and scooters used by disabled individuals starting August 1.
The district offers this program with the lowest personal contribution amount and the highest coverage amount among local governments nationwide. Disabled individuals pay a personal contribution of 30,000 KRW, and can receive up to 50 million KRW per accident for third-party bodily injury and property damage liability coverage.
Electric assistive devices have a high possibility of collision with pedestrians during operation, and the compensation amounts for accidents have imposed a burden on disabled users. Therefore, the district has initiated liability support for accidents occurring during the operation of electric assistive devices to reduce this burden and improve mobility convenience for disabled individuals.
The support targets all registered disabled residents of Seocho-gu who use electric wheelchairs or electric scooters according to their resident registration. The insurance coverage period is one year, from August 1 this year to July 31 next year. The coverage scope includes third-party bodily injury and property damage liability arising from the operation of electric assistive devices. However, bodily injury to the insured and damage to the electric assistive devices themselves are not covered by this insurance.
The insurance contract is managed by the district, and registered disabled individuals in Seocho-gu are automatically enrolled without any separate procedures. To file a claim, insured persons can directly apply through the website or consultation phone of the insurance company, WheelchairKorea.com. Claims must be made within three years from the date of the accident, and there is no limit on the number of claims.
Additionally, the district operates the ‘Seocho-gu Hanuri Assistive Device Repair Center’ to support repairs of damaged electric wheelchairs and scooters in case of accidents. Repair costs are supported up to 300,000 KRW annually for low-income disabled individuals and up to 200,000 KRW annually for general disabled individuals. A ‘Free Repair Delivery Service’ is also available, where disabled individuals who have difficulty visiting in person can make a reservation by phone for pick-up, repair, and delivery back to their home.
