2nd Place 'Elemental' Sets Record as Top Foreign Film Hit This Year
The film "Milsoo," starring actors Kim Hye-soo and Yum Jung-ah, topped the box office in its opening weekend.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticket sales network on the 31st, "Milsoo" (directed by Ryu Seung-wan) attracted 1,176,112 viewers over the three-day weekend (28th?30th), securing the number one spot at the box office. Since its release on the 26th, it has recorded a cumulative audience of 1,724,894.
Four major Korean films are consecutively releasing in the summer theater market, targeting the tentpole market. As the first contender, director Ryu Seung-wan's "Milsoo" has maintained the number one box office position by drawing over 1.72 million viewers in its first week.
Last weekend's heatwave appears to have been a boon, as many people flocked to major multiplexes housing cinemas. Additionally, the actors and director actively visited theaters and met fans through stage greetings, boosting the film's success.
In second place, Disney·Pixar's animation "Elemental" attracted 364,222 viewers. Released on the 14th of last month, it has accumulated 5,672,734 viewers. It surpassed the Japanese animation "Suzume no Tojimari" to become this year's top-grossing foreign film.
Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible ? Dead Reckoning Part One" drew 309,331 viewers, ranking third. Released on the 12th, it has been seen by 3,531,872 viewers.
The animation "Detective Conan: Black Iron's Oath" attracted 89,411 viewers, placing fourth. "Barbie," directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, was watched by 81,146 viewers, ranking fifth.
Sixth place went to "Insidious: The Red Door," seventh to "Super Wings the Movie: Maximum Speed," and eighth to "Pinkfong Cinema Concert 3: Catch the Gingerbread Man."
