Seongdong-gu, Rental of Sunshades to Prepare for Heatwave
Rent Rainbow Parasols in Seongdong-gu to Beat the Summer Heat
Until the end of September, Seongdong-gu Office and 21 community centers offer one parasol per person for up to 7 days
Heatwave countermeasures include cooling shelters, street washing, Seongdong Saemmul Warehouse, safe lodging, and other community-focused initiatives
Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) is offering free parasol rentals until the end of September to help residents stay healthy and safe during the peak heatwave season.
Named after the district’s symbol, the seven-colored rainbow, the parasols are called ‘Mujigae Yangsan’ (Rainbow Parasols). Any Seongdong-gu resident can rent one parasol per person by presenting an ID at the district office, community centers, or the public sports center. Currently, the service is available at 21 locations, with a maximum rental period of 7 days. Each rental site has a designated manager to ensure a smooth rental experience.
Using a parasol blocks ultraviolet rays, preventing skin diseases and hair loss, and can reduce the perceived temperature by 7℃. The government encourages the use of parasols and the provision of shared parasol rental services.
In addition, the district is actively implementing heatwave countermeasures. Cooling shelters are operating at 251 locations, including senior centers, community centers, and smart shelters. For low-income elderly living alone or elderly couples aged 60 and above in vulnerable housing conditions, six private lodging facilities have been designated as ‘Safe Lodging’ to provide relief from tropical nights, operating until the end of August.
To mitigate urban heat island effects during heatwaves, watering operations are intensified on main and side roads. Currently, seven street-washing vehicles operate three times daily, including weekends. Using small watering trucks, the service extends beyond traditional markets and shopping districts to school routes and multi-use facilities, creating cooler street environments throughout neighborhoods.
