On the 26th, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, the Public Interest Reporting Center has begun clarifying the circumstances with the bereaved family regarding the death of teacher A, who worked at a private elementary school in Seoul and took an extreme step six months ago.
The family explained that while working, A had experienced verbal abuse from the parents of perpetrators while handling school violence cases and suffered from an excessive workload, including being assigned to undesirable tasks.
A’s father suddenly visited a joint press conference held by Superintendent Cho Hee-yeon of Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education and teachers' organizations on the 24th regarding the death of a teacher at Seo-i Elementary School in Seocho-gu, demanding a thorough investigation.
At that time, A’s father tearfully said, "My daughter also took sick leave in July last year and lived until six months ago when this happened. Please investigate together. Because it is a private school, they say it takes an enormous amount of time. Please include my daughter’s case in the countermeasure committee."
He added, "At Seo-i Elementary School, condolence wreaths are placed, but my daughter died without even receiving a single flower. She was the same kind of teacher and a beloved member of my family."
In response, Superintendent Cho promised the bereaved family that the relevant departments would review the death case. The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education held a first meeting with the bereaved family on the 24th, and the Public Interest Reporting Center decided to take charge of the case and start an internal investigation.
