New Term 'Swiftnomics' Coined for Economic Impact
Pop star Taylor Swift, who is currently conducting a concert tour in 20 cities across the United States, has been reported to significantly contribute to the economic revitalization of the regions where her concerts are held.
According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 25th (local time), Taylor Swift's world tour concert project, 'The Eras Tour,' taking place in more than 20 U.S. cities, has led to increased demand for hotels, restaurants, and other services. WSJ reported that this has helped the local economies recover from the slump caused by COVID-19.

Fans who could not purchase concert tickets also visited Cincinnati during the concert period, and thousands of fans sang along to the performance songs in a park near the concert venue. Julie Calvert, CEO of the Cincinnati Tourism Board, said that no other concert can produce such an effect, stating, "Swift has a powerful influence, and she is the only one with this kind of magic."
The Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee, prepared a pop-up exhibition timed with Swift's concert period, attracting 114,000 visitors in May alone.

The Federal Reserve's Beige Book report on economic conditions, released this month, also mentioned Swift's concerts. The Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank noted that although the overall regional tourism recovery is slowing, the influx of tourists attending the concert in May led to record hotel revenues in the area.
During the concert periods in Chicago and Minneapolis, hotel room occupancy rates in those areas reached all-time highs.
The U.S. leg of the tour, which started in March and will conclude with a total of 52 performances by August 9, is expected to generate $1 billion in revenue. This is the largest scale in the history of U.S. concerts. Until now, the top-grossing tour was Elton John's ongoing concert series from 2018 to this year, which earned $887 million.
The Beige Book, the economic report released this month by the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed), also mentioned Taylor Swift's concert. The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia stated that although the overall regional tourism recovery is slowing, the influx of tourists who came to see the concert in May led to regional hotel revenues reaching a record high.

After completing the U.S. performances, Swift plans to hold overseas concerts in Asia, Australia, Europe, and South America. More than 100 overseas shows are scheduled, with 54 of them taking place this year. Swift's overseas concerts are receiving as much attention from global fans as those in the U.S. Earlier this month, Ticketmaster, Swift's official ticket seller, postponed sales in France due to technical issues caused by about 900,000 people rushing to purchase tickets on the site.
Although New Zealand is not included in this tour, Air New Zealand explained that bookings for flights to Australia in February next year have surged, describing this as the 'Swift phenomenon.' Air New Zealand plans to operate 14 additional flights to accommodate 3,000 extra passengers during the concert period. Some flights even carry a special number, 'NZ1989,' named after Swift's fifth album.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift recently reached her 12th number one on the Billboard main album chart, 'Billboard 200,' with her re-recorded album 'Speak Now-Taylor's Version.'
