Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok Encourages Peach Farmers Affected by Heavy Rain in Hwasun Area
Directive to Actively Recommend System Improvements to the Government Regarding Crop Compensation
Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 25th that Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Young-rok visited Hwarim Farm in Hwasun-eup (representative Park Jang-young) around 1:30 PM on the 24th to check the damage status of peach fruit drop caused by the heavy rain and to encourage the affected farmers.
Hwasun-gun experienced continuous rainfall averaging 728mm, resulting in damage to 143 public facilities.
Among these, emergency measures have been completed for 138 cases, safety inspections are underway for one case at Dongbok Tunnel in Dongbok-myeon, and repairs are being pursued for four cases.
Peaches in Hwasun-gun, which account for 30% of Jeollanam-do’s production, are cultivated on 174 hectares by 352 farms.
The recent heavy rain caused damage to all farms, including ▲ fruit drop ▲ pests and diseases ▲ softening of the fruit.
According to the Nonghyup Jeonnam Headquarters General Insurance Department, Hwasun-gun peaches suffered spring frost damage, and more than 20% fruit drop damage is expected due to the recent heavy rain.
Governor Kim Young-rok listened to voices from the field regarding crop compensation for peaches, which are affected by abnormal low temperatures, flood damage, and anthracnose, resulting in yields less than 80% of normal years. He noted that compensation payments are decreasing despite insurance premium increases, and instructed the government to identify issues with crop disaster insurance and actively propose improvements.
Goo Bok-gyu, Mayor of Hwasun-gun, stated, “Since peach varieties are distributed diversely from early to late ripening types, we propose to continue damage surveys until the final harvest. We are also considering a plan for the public sector to purchase large quantities to alleviate the concerns of peach farmers.”
