"Let's Clean the Beach Together"... Lotte Department Store Hosts 'Beachcombing' in Jeju and Busan
Lotte Department Store is hosting a ‘beachcombing’ event to clean up trash and other debris at popular beaches in Jeju and Busan during the vacation season.
The company will hold the event at Jeju’s ‘Woljeongri Beach’ from the 27th to the 30th of this month, and at Busan’s ‘Gwangalli Beach’ from August 17th to 20th. This year’s beachcombing event will last for 8 days, doubling the duration from last year and offering a wider variety of participation benefits.
As part of Lotte Department Store’s ESG campaign ‘RE:EARTH,’ last summer the company conducted beach cleaning activities called ‘beachcombing’ at beaches in Jeju and Yangyang. Approximately 3,000 people participated, with 85% of them belonging to the MZ generation.
At each beach, a ‘RE:EARTH Market’ will be operated. Participants can register for the ‘beachcombing’ event at the ‘RE:EARTH booth,’ decorated in the campaign’s signature green and white colors, and borrow a ‘plogging kit’ containing biodegradable trash bags, gloves, tongs, and other items needed for environmental cleanup. Participants who collect driftwood, trash, and other debris scattered along the coastline will be able to exchange them for various eco-friendly goods.
A total of over 4,000 items from 14 types of goods will be given away. These include ‘zero waste’ goods that minimize waste generation and ‘upcycling’ products made by recycling the department store’s representative waste materials such as exterior banners and insulated bags. Depending on the amount of trash collected, participants will receive bamboo tissue paper, organic handkerchiefs, bamboo toothbrushes, as well as upcycled cross bags and card holders. Those who pre-register through the Lotte Department Store app will receive a limited-edition upcycled keyring featuring Jeju’s iconic ‘Dol Hareubang’ and Busan’s ‘Dongbaek flower’ on a first-come, first-served basis.
To commemorate the beachcombing event, various customer participation events will also be held. On the 29th at 4 p.m., singer-songwriter ‘Yojo’ will perform a busking concert at Jeju’s Woljeongri Beach, and on the 19th at 4 p.m., a ‘one-day class’ combining yoga and plogging led by famous stretching instructor Kang Hana will take place at Busan’s Gwangalli Beach.
