Cho Hee-yeon Visits Seoi Elementary Memorial Altar... "Will Strengthen Parent Complaint Procedures"
Regarding the Seoi Elementary School Incident, "Will Verify the Facts of Power Abuse Behavior"
Cho Hee-yeon, Superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, announced that he will verify whether there was any 'gapjil complaint' from parents related to the death of an elementary school teacher that occurred in Seocho-gu, Seoul. Along with this, he promised to establish legal measures to protect teachers who are struggling due to complaints.
On the 21st, Superintendent Cho visited the memorial altar set up at Seo-i Elementary School in Seocho-gu, Seoul, and laid a wreath before making these remarks. He said, "A significant part of it was criticism directed at us," adding, "I feel even more sorrowful and a deep sense of responsibility."
He continued, "With the intention of honoring the deceased's dignity and quickly restoring teachers' authority in teaching and classroom management, I am determined to work harder," and promised, "Together with the National Assembly's Education Committee and the Ministry of Education, we will strive to advance the legal system regarding teachers' rights to teach and manage classrooms, which are currently insufficient, taking this opportunity to institutionalize these measures."
He also stated, "We will cooperate with the police investigation to ensure that all issues related to the deceased's death are uncovered. At the education office level, we have received reports of school violence cases and some aggressive behavior by certain parents related to school violence, and we plan to conduct an inspection."
Regarding the education office's investigation plan, Superintendent Cho said, "We will actively cooperate with the police investigation," and added, "We intend to conduct a thorough investigation with teachers to ensure that the police investigation is complete and extensive."
About the incident, he explained, "The Gangnam Seocho Office of Education conducted an initial assessment, and the school (Seo-i Elementary) has been verifying facts based on what has been identified at the school level and communicating with the police," adding, "In particular, there have been some cases of 'gapjil' complaints from certain parents, and we intend to verify the facts."
Regarding teachers who are struggling due to complaints, he explained, "It is necessary to formalize and strengthen the procedures for parents to file complaints or protests at schools," and said, "We have submitted an ordinance to protect educational activities." This means that access to schools and complaint procedures will be officially strengthened.
