Former Secretary Song Young-gil's Detention Review Petition for 'Donbongtu' Case... Hearing Scheduled for Tomorrow
Park Yong-su (53), a former aide to former leader Song Young-gil and a key suspect in the 'Democratic Party Leadership Election Money Envelope Scandal,' has requested the court to reconsider his detention.
According to the court on the 19th, Park filed a detention review petition at the Seoul Central District Court on the same day. The hearing will be held at 11 a.m. on the 20th before the Criminal Appeals Division 1-1 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Im Jae-hoon, Judges Kim Soo-kyung and Kim Hyung-jak).
A detention review is a procedure in which a detained suspect challenges the legality of their detention and requests the court to reconsider. If the court accepts the detention review petition, the prosecution must release the suspect.
Earlier, Park was arrested on the 3rd on charges of conspiring with Kang Rae-gu, former Standing Auditor of Korea Water Resources Corporation, and Lee Jeong-geun, former Deputy Secretary-General of the Democratic Party, to distribute a total of 67.5 million won ahead of the 2021 leadership election. The prosecution's view is that Park provided a total of 60 million won to independent lawmaker Yoon Kwan-seok, who then distributed 3 million won each to 20 incumbent lawmakers, including Lee Seong-man.
Park is also accused of having the consulting firm 'Yamjeonhan Goyangi' cover 92.4 million won in polling costs related to the primary election using funds from 'Peace and Livelihood Research Institute' (Meoksayeon), an external support organization of former leader Song, and creating false estimates to conceal this by making it appear as if Meoksayeon spent the money on other projects.
