Suspected Embezzlement of 100 Million KRW in Business Promotion Expenses
Former Seoul Dongdaemun District Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol, accused of receiving money and valuables from employees in exchange for promotions, has been brought to trial.
The Criminal Division 4 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Shin Dae-kyung) indicted former Mayor Yoo on the 13th on charges of embezzlement, bribery under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, abuse of authority, and obstruction of the exercise of rights.
Former Mayor Yoo is accused of receiving money and valuables worth about 50 million won from three employees in exchange for promotions during his tenure and ordering the arbitrary alteration of work evaluations of subordinate public officials. He is also charged with embezzling approximately 100 million won in business promotion expenses from 2014 to 2021.
Earlier, the police applied for an arrest warrant for former Mayor Yoo three times?in June and August last year, and February this year?but the prosecution and courts rejected or dismissed the requests, leading to his non-custodial transfer in March this year.
Mr. A, a former chief secretary accused of delivering bribes to former Mayor Yoo under the pretext of promotion requests, was arrested and indicted last year, and his trial is ongoing.

Former Mayor Yoo was elected in the local elections of 1998, 2010, 2014, and 2018, serving as a "four-term district mayor."
