K-water Raises Crisis Alert to Highest Level... 8 Dam Gates Opened
Korea Water Resources Corporation announced on the 14th that it will raise the crisis alert level from caution to the highest level, severe, following the government's Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters' issuance of emergency level 3 due to heavy rainfall.
As of 10 PM the previous day, the average rainfall in the multipurpose dam basins managed by the corporation reached a total of 351mm.
Soyanggang Dam recorded a cumulative rainfall of 309mm, and Daecheong Dam reached 336mm. Juwam Dam recorded 500mm, Boryeong Dam 370mm, Andong Dam 422mm, and Namgang Dam 433mm.
Heavy rain is expected to continue nationwide through the weekend, with 100 to 250mm forecasted in the central region, and over 400mm in some areas of Chungnam and Jeonbuk provinces.
The corporation has established an emergency response headquarters and switched to a 24-hour emergency duty system.
They are monitoring real-time changes in rainfall and downstream dam conditions, and have opened the sluice gates of eight dams including Chungju Dam and Daecheong Dam.
Following the issuance of the severe alert level, about 100 departments at headquarters and field sites have established an emergency work system to respond proactively.
