South Korea-US B-52H Deployment on Korean Peninsula in Direct Response to North Korea's Hwasong-18 Provocation Within a Day
One day after North Korea launched its solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) 'Hwasong-18,' the U.S. strategic asset B-52H strategic bomber was deployed to the Korean Peninsula and conducted joint exercises with the Republic of Korea Air Force.
On the 13th, the Joint Chiefs of Staff announced, "South Korea and the United States conducted a combined air exercise today with the deployment of the U.S. Air Force's B-52H strategic bomber to the Korean Peninsula."
In the joint air exercise on that day, South Korea's F-15K and the U.S. Air Force's F-16 fighters participated, flying in combined formations with the B-52H over the Korean Peninsula. The deployment of the B-52H over the Korean Peninsula occurred 13 days after the last deployment on the 30th of the previous month.
The B-52H can carry up to 31 tons of bombs, including air-to-ground nuclear missiles with a range of 200 km, and can fly over 6,400 km to bomb targets. The deployment of the B-52H to the Korean Peninsula on this day is interpreted as a response measure following North Korea's launch of the Hwasong-18 the previous day.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff detected one Hwasong-18 missile launched around 10 a.m. the previous day from the Pyongyang area toward the East Sea, and North Korea's Korean Central News Agency reported the next day that the missile ascended to 6,648.4 km and flew 1,001.2 km for 4,491 seconds.
The Hwasong-18, which uses solid fuel, can be quickly moved by a transporter erector launcher (TEL) and does not require fueling before launch, making surprise launches easier.
Accordingly, if North Korea's solid-fuel ICBM technology matures, the South Korea-U.S. 'kill chain'?which preemptively strikes by identifying launch trends in advance?could be neutralized, raising concerns that the U.S. could also face increased military threats.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff emphasized, "Through this exercise, South Korea and the United States rapidly deployed mutually timely coordinated U.S. extended deterrence forces to the Korean Peninsula, enhancing combined operational capabilities," adding, "We once again demonstrated the combined defense capabilities and posture of the alliance through overwhelming power, as well as the U.S.'s ironclad commitment to the defense and extended deterrence of the Korean Peninsula."
