Mother Who Knew and Ignored New Husband's Sexual Assault of Daughter and Daughter's Friend Arrested
"Guardian Neglect" Sentenced to 1 Year and 6 Months Imprisonment
Daughter's Investigation Stopped and Police Requests Avoided
A biological mother who failed to protect her daughter despite knowing about 12 years of sexual abuse by her stepfather was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison.
According to Yonhap News on the 13th, Judge Jaehoon Ahn of the Cheongju District Court Criminal Division 2 explained the sentencing by stating, "The defendant neglected her duty as a guardian, which she was rightfully obligated to fulfill, and instead obstructed the investigation by authorities, committing an incomprehensible crime that requires severe punishment."
Additionally, she was ordered to complete 120 hours of a child abuse treatment program and was banned from employment at child-related institutions for 5 years.
Ms. A (55) is accused of neglecting to protect her daughter, Ms. B, who suffered sexual violence from her new husband in 2020 and attempted extreme measures twice the following year, by failing to provide proper care and treatment.
She also evaded police requests to participate in investigations with her daughter and stopped Ms. B's police interrogation.
During the trial, Ms. A denied the charges, stating, "I did not know my husband would do such things."
