Participants Urge "Implementation of Independent Military and Diplomatic Measures Between Korea and the US"
President Yoon Suk-yeol, who visited Lithuania to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, chaired an emergency National Security Council (NSC) standing committee meeting on the 12th (local time) regarding North Korea's long-range ballistic missile.
According to Kim Eun-hye, the chief spokesperson, President Yoon chaired the emergency NSC standing committee meeting at 5:45 a.m. on the same day (11:45 a.m. Korean time) in response to North Korea's long-range ballistic missile launch.
During today's meeting, which was connected via video conference with the National Crisis Management Center, President Yoon said, "North Korea's provocation occurred during the NATO summit, where global security cooperation is being discussed, and I will urge the international community to show strong unity on the occasion of today's NATO meeting."
President Yoon urged the attendees, "I hope that military and diplomatic measures between South Korea and the United States, as well as those we take independently, will be carried out without any setbacks."
He also added, "Through the Korea-US Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) meeting to be held on the 18th, we will further strengthen the execution capability of extended deterrence."
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, North Korea launched one ballistic missile from Pyongyang toward the East Sea around 10 a.m. on the same day. The North Korean ballistic missile was launched at a high angle, flew approximately 1,000 km, and landed in the East Sea. This ballistic missile launch by North Korea comes 27 days after it fired in response to the Korea-US combined joint firepower annihilation exercise on the 15th of last month.
